III. Battle of Messines

Belgium
7 – 9 June 1917

Forming the initial phase of the drive to Passchendaele, the Battle of Messines was fought in an effort to extend the Allies’ ground south of Ypres. Assisted by the cover of the Allies’ tremendous mine explosions beneath Messines Ridge, the New Zealand Division secured the ruined town of Messines and then facilitated the following Australian troops to continue the assault.
